Ubuntu’s new Mac-like controls are a small marketing win
Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx (we were hoping for Lusty Lemur, but hey), will be out of beta and ready for prime time soon. A lot of the early chatter was about the interface updates, including logo and color scheme changes, and Ubuntu’s decision to move window controls (e.g. close, minimize) from the top right to the top left.
Basically, they’ve transitioned the controls from Windows-style to Mac OS-style.
That is certainly new, and will take some getting used to. An alpha-testing friend of mine said it took “a few hours” over one or two days to start using the buttons without thinking too much about it, but he still occasionally catches himself mousing toward the wrong side of a window. Time will tell whether this was a smart long-term move for Ubuntu. [Lifehacker]
The quote above surprised me, because I’m so unused to seeing computer savvy people actually use those controls instead of the keyboard shortcuts. Basically, who cares where those buttons go?
It’s pretty clear that Canonical is trying to sell Ubuntu, and Linux generally, as a design and user friendly operating system. Mimicking Mac rather than Windows is a pretty consumer-smart way of doing that.
